Investment Studio > Objects > Browser > Favorites > Symbols

Favorite symbols are short names which can be used like URLs.

Example: If you have assigned the symbol "msv" to a favorite with URL "http://www.investmentstudio.com", typing "msv" in the URL box and hitting Enter (or clicking the "Go" button) will cause the full URL "http://www.investmentstudio.com" to be expanded and navigated to.

Favorite symbols are particularly useful in views with a master Grid object (Portfolios, Assets, Quotes). Selecting a record in the Grid causes that record's symbol field to be sent to all Browser objects in the view. In response, each Browser object looks up the symbol in its own favorites list and loads the corresponding favorite. If the symbol is not found, the Browser object's home page is loaded.

For instance, an Assets view may contain three Browser objects displaying company news for the selected asset, SEC filings for the selected asset and intraday charts for the selected asset, respectively. This is possible because favorites are not shared: each Browser object maintains its own list of favorites, independently of other Browser objects. The same symbol can therefore be associated with different favorites in different Browser objects.

Favorite symbols are assigned and edited in the Browser object's Favorites panel. To edit a symbol, select it in the favorites list, wait a moment and then click again to open the in-place editor. Press Enter to close the in-place editor and commit to the new symbol; press Esc to abort editing and revert to the previous symbol.
